a great weekend of relaxation and a leap back to childhood Mar 2, 2009by amandaAdd Comment

This week was not nearly as jam packed of food and fun wanderings as my past three weekend have been, but it was a very nice change of pace.

On Fat Tuesday I had my last serving of chocolate/cake in the form of an individual oreo cheesecake from Eileen’s Famous Cheesecake (“the best cheesecake in New York”). I have to say it was the perfect treat for the beginning of a long journey void of rich cocoa and caked sweets.

Later during the work week I went to Prince Street Cafe where I had spotted a fantastic looking turkey sandwich on their menu. I think I may have to start making this for lunch at home, a baguette filled with cold turkey, brie, green apples, and cranberry chutney. Very satisfying, not to mention I got a cheese and chives scone to snack on throughout the day.

Friday night Emily and I were supposed to see Coraline, but both showings were sold out!! So we postponed the date and I headed home for some poppy seed chicken casserole leftovers (I cooked!) and a night of Benjamin Button and hummingbird illustrating.

The next morning Melissa and I went to 46th street, Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, to buy student rush tickets for the Broadway rendition of Little Mermaid. We saw some mounted policemen along the way and I was elated to pet one of their horses. Oh how I miss my horseys, it has been too long since I’ve ridden.

After buying tickets I headed to Brooklyn so I could peruse my most essential store, Target. There I found some cute sandals, berry lemonade Jones soda, and cheap food compared to the grocery in Manhattan. Unfortunately I had horrid customer service at the dressing room and the cash register. The dumb cashier was talking on the phone then forcefully blamed me for her inability to tell me the total cost of my purchase because I paid in gift cards. I had no guilt in back talking her and telling her she shouldn’t talk on the phone at work and after an attitude laden “excuse me?!” she realized she better treat me a little nicer or else I’d probably bitch out her manager. Luckily I was happy enough with my sandals not to be too upset :p

The rest of the day I spent reading, updating my portfolio (it’s not online yet) and drawing up some designs for my business card. Finally it was time to go see Little Mermaid and lo and behold we were the first two seats in the center front row. This worried me for a bit, fearing pain in my neck, but it was perfect. I loved being so close to their faces to see expressions and costume details. My entire vision was consumed by the stage and its crazy undersea set and sequin covered dancers. I felt like a child, bright eyed, waiting for my favorite Disney songs to come to life on stage. Ursula’s character was my favorite. She was curvy, powerful, vocally commanding and at the same time absolutely hilarious. Flounder was played by a little boy and his singing was great too, as was Ariel’s. Sebastian was another fantastic performance, his crab waddling and island accent made him irresistible to watch. It was so much fun and for thirty dollars, a front row seat and an amazing performance with belting singers and an excited audience was completely worth it.

Sunday became lazy day. I stayed in my pajamas and did not set foot outside. About half the day was spent making my business card (which I will post a final version of relatively soon) and the other half was spent watching Chocolat and Love Actually. I’m not sure if Chocolat was such a good idea, I nearly swooned at all the cocoa on screen.

After reading some of Northanger Abbey, I went to bed early, hoping that the expected 14 inches of snow in one blizzardy night would constitute a day of work. It didn’t. I woke up and walked through some horrid snow, wind, ice, flood and am still longing to be back inside the apartment with my pen tablet, Photoshop and some warm cider.
