SPARKLES & SPICE

Bonjour! I'm a foodie artist located in San Francisco. I savor the small pleasures in life, mainly delectable noms. I love slowing down to take notice of detail, delighting in what is often easy to rush habitually through. I live Mindfully.

second week of new york adventures…lots more shopping this time. Jan 19, 2009by amanda2 Comments

I got an iphone!!!! Somehow I managed to convince my parents to switch to AT&T so that I could buy myself the most handy device needed for living in the big city ;) It really has come in use already by giving me directions while I’m out and about on the streets. Not to mention it helps me stay even more in touch with all of the people I miss in Cincinnati.

As for co-op, this past week has gone kind of slow, but I’m still working on stuff for the History Channel which makes up for having a lot of down time. During work on Thursday Emily and I went to lunch for some French cuisine at a little cafe called La Patisserie. It was a tiny place with a bright blue and yellow store front full of fruit tarts and raspberry chocolate cakes. I ordered toasted ham and brie on a baguette which tasted incredible and was at a surprisingly good price. Emily had some issues ordering since they were out of tuna and unfortunately almost everything on the menu. She ended up getting a vegetarian panini which was just as good. Now, for the amusing part…our order didn’t go so smoothly because we had a crazed, frantic lady waiting on us. She forgot to put our food in, forgot to tell Emily there was no tuna until 10 minutes later, asked us if we needed anything then told us she was too busy so we had to wait, didn’t bring us our water until after a different waiter had brought us our food (this is a half hour after we originally ordered), and not to mention she brought us the wrong check. After ordering some creme brulee to go and getting our new and supposedly correct check, Emily was told that they accidentally threw her left over sandwich away. Thankfully they gave her a whole new sandwhich and we were set to go, except that the crazy waitress had brought us another wrong check!!

That’s Emily in front of a scary old woman statue and there’s my delectable sandwich

Friday night started out great by getting off work a little early. It was beyond freezing out so Melissa and I decided to stay in and order Indian. This excited me because I LOVE Indian food. Tikka Masala is probably my favorite dish ever and I couldn’t wait. Disappointment set in when I got a lousy, watery sauce with chunks of chicken and onion in it instead of that familiar and creamy Indian food I have come to except. It was expensive and horrible. I was not happy.

Saturday was Brooklyn shopping day! We went in some boutiques and I spotted a gorgeous 300 dollar necklace of a solid, silver fawn coated in gold. I wants it! We also ventured to the thrift stores which was neat because a lot of the clothes were expensive brands I recognized from Anthropologie and other upscale stores. After Brooklyn we hopped back on the L (which is under construction on the weekends making it somewhat of a headache to ride) and went to Union Square where I checked American Eagle and Urban for some gloves and a super fuzzy hoodie to keep me from freezing at work (we have bad heating in our building).

Pictured on top are rows of Kinder Bars…they brought back memories of when Amy Siler’s dad would bring them back from Germany and we would devour them within an hour. Beneath that are some birds that reminded me of the kind my Nana used to have around her house and on the bottom right is a pretty pink shirt I nearly bought at the thrift store.

Alas, the day ended and I had failed to purchase anything. I wanted to make up for the bad dinner the night before by ordering some good old Pizza Hut stuffed crust, but after about 8 phone calls to locations around NY, I found that none of them would deliver to Avenue C. This resulted in ordering a thin crust NY pizza which was decent (although my roommate said that a large pizza there cost 15 bucks, and I got charged $14.50 for a small, so now I’m questioning whether or not I got ripped off.) Let’s just say I’m pissed that I spent so much money on crappy food this weekend instead of cool clothes.

Sunday was a lot better. Melissa was feeling sick so I went out on my own. First I picked up some gloves I spotted in Brooklyn (soft, fingerless gloves with cute owls on them so that I can use my iphone). Next I took the subway all by myself :) to 86th street and walked to the Guggenhem Museum. They had the Kandinsky and Thannhauser Collections which I viewed for free with the help of Melissa’s id. I was fascinated and even got scolded for being a wee bit too close to the Van Gogh painting :p There was Manet, Degas, Picasso, Gauguin and even Renoir!!! It was awesome to see their work in real life, not just on the pages of my Art History books.

After the museum I decided that the weather was nice enough to continue exploring so what else could I do but shop? I headed to Herald Square, saw the Empire State building, proudly avoided buying 70 percent off boots, and braved the many many floors of Macy’s. Not only did the store house a Starbucks and McDonalds, it had the most clothes I have ever seen in one place at one time. I think they confidently call it the “World’s Largest Store” and I believe them because I got lost a couple times. Walking though the store’s 9 stories was fascinating, especially riding the old wooden escalators that were used back in 1902 when Macy’s first opened on 34th street.

On top is the Guggenheim Museum and below that are some pretty lights in Herald Square. Below is the Empire State building and gigantic stuffed animals I found on a random floor in Macy’s.

I finished off the 3 day weekend by going to Target today. Oh how I love that store! I bought myself some long sleeve tee-shirts (which were very much needed), some Starbucks truffles, and a pretty, flowery cup that was only 2 bucks. I saw a shirt for Kirby in the dollar section and told my mom to go buy it and send me a picture of him. It’s pink with a heart on the back…haha, so cute. Anyway that was all the way in Brooklyn and now I’m back at the apartment determined to watch some After Effects tutorials and not idle away the afternoon with episodes of Angel or chapters of Return of the King. I need to brush up on my skills!
